Concerts

The outstanding concert program is one of the things which has always ensured an unforgettable musical experience for visitors to the World Harmonica Festival in Trossingen.

This year we believe we have once again succeeded in putting together a program which features some of the most exciting harmonica acts performing today and which reflects the remarkable diversity and musicality of today´s harmonica scene. Our evening concerts, presenting internationally renowned artists in many different styles, offer listeners a spectrum of musical highlights which will make the World Harmonica Festival 2009 truly memorable.

"Exciting Chromatic Soloists and Ensemble"

King´s Harmonica Quintett (Hong Kong)
The King´s Harmonica Quintett was founded in 1987 by a group of harmonica enthusiasts in Hong Kong. They swiftly developed their own approach to harmonica ensemble playing and became well known for their fantastic arrangements. In 1997 the quintett wrote musical history for Hong Kong when they were awarded first prize in the harmonica group competition at the World Harmonica Festival in Trossingen. Since then the King´s Harmonica Quintett has gained a reputation as one of the finest ensembles on the international harmonica scene. Their concert appearances and festival performances are guaranteed an enthusiastic reception and have garnered them glowing reviews from the critics.

Willi Burger (Italy)
His mastery of all the technical nuances of the instrument is unquestionable and he is blessed with a wonderfully pure and expressive tone, but it is the passion with which Willi Burger performs in concert which makes him one of the greatest classical harmonica virtuosos of our time.
Together with his accompanist, pianist Marcello Parolini, Burger literally entrances audiences with his peerless renditions of timeless melodies, awakening them to new life through his devotion to and deep love of music. It is the fact that he celebrates his music with such total conviction and infectious enthusiasm that imbues it with a seductive charm and power of expression which is seldom equalled.
We are very happy to be able to present Willi Burger in concert at the world Harmonica Festival 2009.

Olivier Ker Ourio (France)
Olivier Ker Ourio was born in Paris in 1964, but grew up in his family´s homeland: the small French territory of Reunion Island, where his ancestors from Brittany came to settle in 1728. Now once again resident in Paris and working as a musician, composer, band leader, and highly-regarded soloist, OKO has established himself as one of the world´s premiere chromatic jazz harmonica players. His compositions combine lyrical melodies with invigorating rhythms and inventive harmonies. Emotionally expressive, warm and inviting, OKO´s music is committed, fresh, and melodic - and above all, straight from the heart. OKO has published 6 CDs as a leader and has played on numerous albums as a guest artist

Sväng (Finland)
With a dynamic, energetic stage presence and a repertoire of original music composed by the group themselves, the contemporary harmonica quartett Sväng are set to dazzle and delight listeners the world over. In their music, Slavic melancholy is bolstered by a compulsive rhythmic groove which betrays the groups´love of music of all stripes. Sväng´s eponymous debut album, released in 2004, was an instant success. Following successful tours around the USA, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Luxembourg, Mexico, UK and Japan, including many radio and television appearances, Sväng released their 2nd CD "Jarruta" in March 2008. Perhaps their strong appeal can be attributed to the novelty of the ensemble sound coupled with their unique program of virtuoso Balkan rhythms, swinging ragtime, passionate tango, world music from the North and wild improvisations. A spectacle that must be witnessed live and a great addition to the World Harmonica Festival program.

"Two Generations of Blues Harmonica"

Mátyás Pribojszki (Hungary)
34-year-old Mátyás Pribojszki from Budapest is one of the new generation of European harmonica virtuosos, in command of a full range of creative talents as an instrumentalist, singer, bandleader and songwriter. Though deeply appreciative of all the legendary blues harp masters who inspired him, he is committed to building his own contemporary style which also incorporates elements which go beyond the stylistic limitations of the traditional blues genre.
As well as in his native Hungary, Mátyás has toured in numerous European countries and appeared with many well known names including Bill Wyman & Rhythm Kings, making a name for himself as a showman through his high energy performances in clubs and at festivals across the continent.
In Trossingen he will be accompanied by the B-Sharp Rhythm Section.

B-Sharp Rhythm Section is:
Dick Bird (guitar & vocals)
Bernd Ohnesorge (bass)
Martin Roettger (drums)

Henry Heggen (USA / Germany)
An exciting harp stylist, expressive vocalist and front man extraordinaire, Herny Heggen is a thoroughly convincing contemporary exponent of the blues tradition originally embodied by musicians such as John Lee Williamson, Sonny Terry, Little Walter or Walter Horton. The genuine passion and intensity of his live showes make him a true "Mr. Natural of the Blues".
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Heggen began a career which now spans almost 35 years in London with Steve Baker in the crazed jugband Have Mercy before moving to Hamburg, where he founded D-Sharp and rapidly became a mainstay of the city's renowned blues scene. Today he tours internationally with his band "Crazy Hambones".
At the World Harmonica Festival gala concert he will present a program of acoustic blues and jugband music with guitarist Dick Bird, who also perfomred with both Have Mercy and B-Sharp.

Los Reyes del KO (Spain)
Los Reyes del K.O. are gonna knock you out! Coll (harmonica) and Costa (guitar & vocals) are true brothers in blues and their "Maximum Latin Blues Power" exudes a vibrant energy which audiences find irresistable. Originally from Santiago de Compostela, they were still in their twenties when they moved to Berlin a few years ago. In the German capital they've become a well established feature of the local blues scene, as well as touring in Spain, mexico and the USA.
Their music is deeply rooted in the Blues and flavoured with funky beats and soul, while clearly acknowledging their Spanish roots with songs like their brillant blues / Nev Orleans style version of "La Paloma".
At the World Harmonica Festival they will appear as a trio with the highly regarded pianist Chris Rannenberg, who also produced their successful 2006 CD "Hot Tin Roof".

Jerry Portnoy (USA)
was born in 1943 and grew up in the blues-drenched atmosphere of Chicago's famous Maxwell Street Market during the golden age of Chicago Blues. He began his professional career in the late 60's and since that time has performed, live and on television, to more people in more places than any other blues harmonica player. As well as touring with the Legendary Blues Band and his own band, The Streamliners, Jerry has had the singular honor of working for many years with the two biggest names in blues - Muddy Waters and Eric Clapton - and is regarded as one of the finest exponents of the Chicago blues harmonica tradition performing today. His constant touring schedule has carried him to 26 countries on five continents, with performaces at the White House, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Smithsonian, London's Royal Albert Hall, and at major jazz festivals worldwide, including Newport and Montreux, as well as playing on several Grammy award winning albums.
In Trossingen he will be accompanied by the B-Sharp Rhythm Section with special guest vocalist Henry Heggen.

B-Sharp Rhythm Section is:
Dick Bird (guitar & vocals)
Bernd Ohnesorge (bass)
Martin Roettger (drums)

"World Harmonica Gala"
- Harmonica meets Accordion -

Howard Levy (USA)
It's no exaggeration to say that Howard Levy acknowledges no musical limits. His sonic adventures include journeys into jazz, pop, rock, world music, Latin, classical, folk, blues, country, theater, and film.
Considered by many to be the world's most advanced diatonic harmonica player, Howard has developed a fully chromatic style on the standard 10-hole diatonic, revolutionizing harmonica playing and taking the instrument into totally new territory by realizing the full potential of overblows.
He is also an accomplished pianist and composer, and plays many other instruments including flute, ocarina, mandolin, saxophone, and percussion. Howard was a founding member of the Bella Fleck & the Flecktones and Trio Globo. He has also performed and/or recorded with Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, Styx, Bobby McFerrin, Paul Simon, John Prine, Paquito D'Rivera and many others, as well as touring and recording extensively in Europe with artists such as Rabih Abou Khaliil and Michael Riessler.
In Trossingen he will perform the premiere of an original composition for harmonica and accordion orchestra.

Marko Jovanovic & Piaccordia (Germany)
Feel like popping into a little Paris bistro on the Seine? Or a Vienna coffe house? Springtime in Berlin-Kreuzberg can also be most inspiring. Marko Jovanovic & Piaccordia can take you to all of these places just with their music, without any necessity to travel at all!
This unusual ensemble can create a whole range of moods to transport the listener. One of the reasons is the unusual line-up: violin, violoncello, accordion, bass and harmonica. Another is the charming and professional performance of the five musicians. All are excellent instrumentalists with widely differing musical backgrounds, which enables them to combine familiar styles with new and original influences to create a colorful ensemble sound.
The imaginative 5-part instrumental arrangements for their enchanting compositions are written by accordionist Gerhard A. Schiewe.

Jens Bunge (Germany)
Born in 1963, Jens was inspired to start learning the chromatic harmonica at the age of 18 by Stevie Wonder's beautiful solo on "Isn't She Lovely". Subsequently he was drawn to jazz through the records of Toots Thielemans and started playing in regional big bands during his time as a theology student in Heidelberg. Later his day job as a teacher gave him the opportunity to travel widely during school holidays and he began dropping into jazz clubs all over the world in order to sit in with local musicians. Recordings and more live work followed and Jens has now become one of the leading contemporary exponents of harmonica jazz, with a flowing and lyrical improvisational style and a strong feeling for expressing the inner nature of the piece in question rather than more technical mastery of the instrument. He is a frequent performer on the Far Eastern jazz scene and a welcome addition to the World Harmonica Festival program.

"Chill-Out Concert"
Opportunity - Acoustic Songs -
with Special Guest - Steve Baker -

Opportunity  - acoustic songs -
Opportunity is a highly individual acoustic trio where the three protagonists create a compelling and immensely enjoyable mix which ensures that band and audience all have a great time. All are excellent singers and their music is characterized by snappy arrangements with well-crafted three part vocal harmonies. Maria Fofana conjures compellingly grooving rhythms from her modest aresenal of percussion instruments, which give Gaz on bass the freedom to sometimes step outside the role of merely holding down the bottom end, and Axel Hagel's acoustic guitar is not just limited to comping out the chords. But they're happy to occasionally put down their instruments and perform an acapella number. Pop, rock, blues, funk or jazz - it's all grist to the Opportunity mill and they've found a convincing way to make it their own.
In the Kesselhaus, Opportunity will be joined by harp maestro and WHF co-organiser Steve Baker, to give the mix the final touch with his subtle, punchy licks and deliver a fitting finale to the World Harmonica Festival 2009.
